Been ill, been very very ill, so ill infact that i have not been online for anything other than mild browsing for over 2 weeks.

To say this years seasonal flu is a killer may not be the understatement i had intended nor as jovial as i hoped. With a death toll in the thousands and millions bedridden and housebound due to the remarkably cold weather and the horrifyingly virulent nature of this illness towns and cites nationwide are still shockingly empty even in the midsts of the January sales.

As it stands i appear to have gotten off fairly lightly with only a 14 day convalescence and will be attempting a more upbeat Blog entry some time before the weekend.

Thanks again for keeping the hope fires lit with your hits, as always i appreciate them more than words can say and i wish you all a heartfelt abet belated Happy New year.

How Too: Make WoW gorgeous

Did you know World of warcraft only runs on its most basic settings even if you run the sliders all the way up to "Ultra" level? Did you know that most modern computers capable of running the "Ultra" level graphics are generally NOT showing the game at its full potential?

Did you know the already stunning look of cataclysm can be improved with a simple macro?

Thanks to the new modified UI you have plenty of control over WoW using the default video settings, which can be accessed from the main menu, but the limits of these sliders are lower than what the game is actually capable of . For instance, the Ground Clutter Density slider has an in-game maximum setting of 160, but the corresponding console command lets you push this all the way up to 256. The difference is pretty breathtaking too - with not only more vegetation, but higher and more lush plants at that. It also makes more stones, but that doesn't excite us quite so much.

We've actually set up two macros to enable us to stand anywhere and see how the rendering engine handles the highest and lowest details. In order to create a macro, simply hit the Macro button from the main menu (hit [Esc] a few times until it pops up). Give your macro a name and a suitable icon and then type in the commands below. Repeat the process for the second macro, then drag both to a free spot on your action bar. Stand in Terokkar Forest or Nagrand and hit one and then the other and grin like a loon.

Once you use these settings, there are times when you'll be particularly aware of the draw distance of the local objects. Unfortunately groundEffectDist is limited to 140, so there's nothing you can do to improve this value.

Get hidden settings

Create a macro inputted with the following to see WoW in a new light:

/console groundEffectDensity 256
/console groundEffectDist 140
/console detailDoodadAlpha 100
/console horizonfarclip 2112
/console farclip 777
/console characterAmbient 0
/console smallcull 0
/console skycloudlod 3

If your framerate takes a dive, then this macro will sort you out:

/console detailDoodadAlpha 1

So there you go, a free graphic update for wow to push your computer to its limits, just dont forget to turn it off when going into towns as you will lag out.

Now i dont know who this guy is as i haven't trolled /b/ for a very long time but the various '_chans' are generally very quick to LOL while they troll and thus far this namefag has yet to turn up on any of the bigger boards as they tend to destroy 'Attentionfagging' at source with a speed and efficiency that borders on the psychotically obsessed. The simple act of taking on a name ANY name defeats the point of anonymous as a whole.

At midnight tonight the World of Warcraft finishes its startling alteration to the new "old world" at the hands of Deathwing.

At 12.01am the servers go live and then everything go's to hell and we can start flying round the old world or start rolling furries and snot gnomes...er...i mean Worgen and Goblins and the world firster's and there teams of boosters can start grinding the hell out of the new content to the new shiny level cap of 85.

Now as for me i'll be starting a new shiny wolf man on my Alliance side server (Alonsus) and a new Goblin on my Horde side server (Saurfang) so i can play through the starting quests in the new noob areas and perhaps get into a new toon...

...perhaps a warrior or shaman...

...perhaps both.

oh well ill see you all in there, FOR THE HORDE!!

For those of you keeping track i've been AFK for almost 4 weeks, the reason is we have just had a new addition to the family and this have been sleep deprived and exhausted.
But im back and thats what matters. BTW yes i am aware that my autpo poster took a dump again and am making efforts to fix it as we speak.

None the less i'm back in time for Azeroth to go to hell and due to the world ending (as we know it) i had a bit of a nostalgia well up over the old world and thought i should share it.

but as i said, i've been away...

Blizzard has started the Cata pre quest countdown to the sundering of Azeroth ans we get to take part by infiltrating the doomsday cult known as the Twilight Hammer. This naferious group of nay sayers believe that by helping the elementals of teh old world take over (and burn down our citys) that they will be elevated to elemental status themselves and survive the sundering of the planet...

....as a long time do gooder it will; be your job to plant your well worn boot in there collective ass earn a little gold and generally get in there way.

no now this is NOT another rant at BT but i am in the middle of updating to fiber optic broadband and things have been less than stable so before you all start with the question "ok why no updates?" you have to take into consideration the following:

#1. new baby in the house means less and less time to update (and sleep)

#2. I have yet to blog about the new baby because the camera the photos are on has kinda died

#3. broadband has been erattic...

#4. did i mention the new baby? yes new baby...me...a daddy....again....another girl....

So we have an official release date for the latest expansion for World of warcraft. Incoming on the 7th December 2010 Cataclysmic insanity hits Azeroth.

So what to do until then? well I for one am attempting to craft myself the Thunderfury Legendary weapon before Blackrock and Molten core is capped up to the 80's with the help of some friends in guild (Marcus, Steve, Rick, Helen & James) to grind the materials and grab some fun classic loot.

Now thats not to say we dont have a few things to do such as Hallows end and the 6th year anniversary event and lets not forget Wintervale to keep us occupied.

there is however one question that niggles at me...

...do i cap my 3 Lv80's to Lv85?...

...or do i roll a Goblin or Worgen?

time to flip a coin i guess

What can i say about BT that hasn't already been said?

....nope....nothing come to mind....

...The failure of there customer service is surprisingly well documented in this blog and i have no desire to continue lambasting them in an open forum.
I will however say that customer care has been less than stellar yet again and i am in no mood to continue speaking about it.

now onto other news, First i would like to say a HUGE congratulations to Alan and Andrea on the birth of there lovely daughter who no doubt will now be wearing a Ewok costume and wielding a itty bitty lightsaber mush to the pleasure and cooing of her proud parents.

sadly the last few weeks have also been tinted with tragedy as another close friend of mine due to all out medical incompetence lost her own child while at the Ulster Hospital. Helen and Billy you have my heartfelt commiserations and you know ill do whatever i can to make this is easy as possible on you both.

so yea things have been a tad busy...

...blog took a back seat, judge me harshly if you will but real life has to take the drivers seat at times like this.

thats right im heading back to Azeroth for more shiny titles and riding beasties!!!

So a few chaps (and a wench named Wenchy :p) set our sights on Ulduar last night with a Rusted protodrake in mind before the next expansion hits. This chevo should be easy to do with our current gear from ICC and with a little luck should be a bit of a laugh.
regardless its an excuse to finally take one of my favourite raids apart on my paladin meat shield.

Mobile Phone Update: BT blues strike again

Yet again BT have decided to piss in my cornflakes. Due to there frankly startling level of incompetence when it comes to maintenance and service on there own lines.

I'm not going to get angry because if i'm honest this is simply par for the course when it comes to BT. I am however saying that this is the fault of one simple problem namely outsourcing and poor product knowledge. Yes i know it sounds racist but if your going to outsource to a 3rd world country then your going to get a 3rd rate service.

screw it im done with BT time to look for a new internet provider .

This post was donr on my goddamn mobile phone FFS, im paying £30 a month for broadband and im having to update on a goddamn mobile phone!!!

again sorry to all my guildmates on missing raids over this period of insanity, i promise it will be rectified as soon as possible.

Ok here we go, this is a rumour mill spot but after months of research I am willing to spew into your little laps.

Here's what we got so far:

* It IS an new MMORPG.

* It appears at this time to be a singular world map currently approximated at 20 times the current size of Azeroth.

* It will use a more "realistic looking" gaming engine.

* The Blizzard "Hydra" team (formally the Diablo 3 team) are now almost universally working on this new project.

* This is NOT a world of warcraft project

ok so thats the facts as we know it so far, lets hit the rumours:

* The game will take place in a photo-realistic world and have only a single inclusive world rather than dedicated world and instance servers.

* It appears to have an "industrial age" style feeling leading up to some quite interesting tech and transport ideas eg: airships, auto-gyros, hot air balloons etc.

* Blizz are attempting to make sure at all WoW players and there current systems will be able to play the new game on minimum settings.

....and thats it....

...no seriously, Blizz have been so tight lipped on this that almost no info has got out.

...ok fine there is one more piece of scuttlebutt but somehow i doubt its authenticity because of the sheer technical enormity that would be required. There was a rumour regarding the new MMO being a fully phased world from the moment you log in.
So how this is rumoured to work is as follows: As you log in you join a phased timeline of your very own as you pass specific key points in the game meaning you will only be interacting with those in game that are at a similar level range to yourself. What this means is that ganking from high levels may well be a thing of the past as well as level 1 gold spam from trial accounts once you phase out of the starting zone.

So these two guys Marcus and Steve....i mean Anon's 1&2 *cough* are friends and guild mates of mine on the oh so very addictive MMORPG known as world of warcraft who have taken it upon themselves to take a nice long look into my little blog and its archives.

Now Marcus ...i mean Anon 1... has taken it upon himself to quit WoW until the end of August due to some personal stuff. Fair enough I say but you must take note that this wonderfully funny chap also happens to be the owner of our teamspeak server and much more importantly our raid leader!

Finally my internet is back and fairly stable at a (still somewhat sluggish) 4.7MBps

Ok i had my totally justified and not at all bitter rant at BT a little over a week ago and because of there shenanigans i have missed out on a ridiculous amount of work and at least 12 shots at the Lich king on WoW with my 10 man group (that i fear may no longer require my services...) as well as movies, music and other streamed media that i have become depressing used to...

...i mean i found myself watching TV for gods sake!!!...

...i haven't watched TV in over two years!
Regardless it seems that BT are giving me my minimum service contract as of 02.00am last night and im willing to take it despite the fact that i pay for 12MBps broadband i will accept 1/3 of my service just to get the hell back online.

However this has slanted me somewhat and i will be looking for a new service provider as soon as possible.

Six goddamn days! SIX GODDAMN DAYS!!

SIX GODDAMN DAYS!!!

Six days without a phone or internet has left me somewhat shaken and more than a little peeved with British Telecom to say the least.
I mean i understand that a nationwide service restart will always have hickups, and i understand that Northern Ireland is a relatively low priority when you consider London was cut off for three days during this "routine maintenance" but to be left for the better part of a week unable to communicate to the world when you work from home regularly is oh so much more than a kick in the pants that it staggers belief.

Over the last six days I have managed to loose no less than three closed timescale freelance jobs, I almost lost my damn job and worst of all I MISSED A RAID!
Ok perhaps priority's a little screwed up there but you know what i mean. This is truly unacceptable as far as customer service go's and to be frank i'm appalled that a service that i pay a premium for can be so easily put on the back burner for so long.

Now as all of you know i'm an equal opportunity asshole, to me everyone can be a tool regardless of race gender or creed...

...but i swear to whatever god you happen to believe in that if i am forced to attempt basic communications with a non EU non english speaking Indian national regarding tech support ever EVER again i think i may just have to go postal on some poor b*stard.

In short "Bangladesh Telecom" can bite my shapely pink ass! I will be changing service to another company as soon as my contract with those work shy idiots in the new Deli sweat shop that they have outsourced to is up.

Yesterday my squishy little mage Malaus on the Saurfang server (EU) and proud member of the Son's of the Horde guild finally managed to saunter, stride, ride and fly his way across the whole of Azeroth and the Outlands to earn his "Explorer" title and shiny golden tabard.

Special thanks to Gavin, Steed and Vathos for there encouragement somehoe managing to "congratualte" me with ever singe achievement on this ridiculous world tour that i somehow managed to spit out in less than two days spamming the hell out of guild chat much to the frustration of my guildies.

Before you ask or make an assumption no this is NOT my workspace...

...it is however the workspace of a work associate (and fellow freelancer) that has little or no ability to understand when or if it is time to tidy his "work area" if not for himself at least so he can keep his cleaning deposit on his place.

So why this image? well somewhere in this pile of detritus is an old Dell Inspiron 4000 that i was picking up yesterday for a Linux project im working on and frankly after seeing this ...er....less than efficient home office space im seriously contemplating buying him a trash compactor for his birthday.

I'm sorry Steven mate but this place is a dive...

...Blame your missus it was her idea...public international embarrassment was the only way.

So unless you simply dont play the game, or have been living under a rock for the last year and a half you will no doubt be aware that the World of Warcraft is about to take a huge dump in the next few months in the form of the latest expansion WoW: Cataclysm.

So once again everything gets a kick in the bum and once incredibly powerful items are swapped out for quest reward and mob dropped greens and blues in the eternal struggle toward the level cap that will be raised to Lv85.

In addition to the cap as we already know are two new races to play and a total of four shiny new starter zones not only for the newly unleashed Wogen and Goblins but also for the poor homeless Trolls and Gnomes.

so what has this got to do with Blood Elfs and engineering (and man children on play equipment) as the comic implies?...

...im playing mt Belf hunter again and leveling engineering...i just made myself a ROFLcopter...i know it was a long way to get around to this, but im so happy!

The sixth (and possibly final) game in the Halo series is going to public Beta testing at one minute past midnight tonight (00.01 GMT) here in the UK.

Joining Nobel team as a replacement after combat inflicted losses to the Covenant forces you take part in the truly epic and much toted fall of the earth colony world "Reach".
Halo reach takes part essentially at the same moment as the opening scenes of the first Halo game (Halo: Combat evolved) in which the ship carrying the Master Chief breaks the blockade of incoming Covenant ships and makes a blind jump that leads him to the first Halo installation.

What Halo reach does is show us how the planet came to be under covenant attack and how Nobel team managed to get the cryogenically sealed Master chief out of enemy hands and up into orbit to the USNC ship Pillar of autumn so he can meet his date with destiny and save the whole damn galaxy.

The public Beta testing is for the prototype weapon and armor capability of the third generation Spartan super soldiers in player Vs Player combat as well as the testing for the newly modified elites and there 1st generation weapons and ships.

Daily Blogg: Doctor who's new series...

The new Doctor who series....I really have no other way to describe this so bare with me.

Tennant's Doctor was a very feminine character, his reactions to certain things implied real compassion and age in an established abet slightly campy world/universe. Through the series the world became more and more hardened and sharpened, life threatening situations genuinely seemed threatening and old enemy's came back with genuine purpose and a fairly dirty gritty world that still left some room for flamboyance and silliness. The 10th Doctor managed to make the show seem fantastic but still fairly real and as such when he said "I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry" Tennant had the screen presence and acting ability to convey just how very old the Doctor really was and that he honestly was sorry about what clearly HAD to happen.

Smith on the other hand seems to be a cos-playing fanboy who has clearly read the scripts and attempted to study the previous incarnations and failed miserably to pick up on the fact that he is ALWAYS supposed to be smartest man in the room. why has he failed?
he too young...no not in terms of age but simply the fact that he plays the character as a 20 something whereas the 9th and 10th clearly relished the fact that they were supposed to be an almost eternal entity with nearly unlimited experience and could step the very very fine line between "you cant win, nobody can because i know i simply wont let myself to loose" and a jovial but stern "I AM the Doctor" self importance that defines the character.

Tennant was hard metal and sharp angles, running for your life and realistic settings with fantastical enemy's that in the stark light of day still seemed imposing. He brough life and genuine affection to the character with an air of wisdom and self assurance one would expect from someone as old as the Doctor.

Smith on the other hand feels like a cheap knockoff with all the charm and wit of a used teabag that has been squeezed out and left in the sun for a week. His big chinned ands somewhat childish style comes over as smug rather than self assured and manages to leave us with only one question...

...where the hell is the Doctor and how the hell did you manage to steal his TARDIS?

sorry but spitfires in space and Go Go Dalek Rangers & Dalek bomb defused by the power of love reeks of the who mobile and celery in lapels bullshit that killed the franchise for so very very long before Eccleston and Tennant managed to turn him from a campy kids show into a real adult sci-fi drama.

Please BBC do us all a favour and kill the big chinned asshole off hop back to Petes world pick up the copied Tennant Doctor pass the regeneration's to him in another form of metacrisis and call it a freaking day.

So i started this week (easter holidays and all) on a bit of a downturn...

...i was a little down and as you all know misery LOVES company and i like rubbing religious types up the wrong way and thus my zombie Jesus theory of evangelism.

Anyway back to this weeks project and the rebirth of "The Humming Cheese Mk2.5" also known as "what i can make out of my computer spare parts bin when im bored out of my skull".

but it means i now have yet another back up mid range desktop if my comp decides to take a dump and combined with my external HD it means no matter what happens i can continue working....

I hate April fools...no not true i LOATH it.

Why? i hear you ask, well its this simple, this is the one day a year where my entire industry take upon themselves to act like total freaking morons.
I understand the tradition & i get the general "HAHA!" attitude but i mean come on folks im a serious journalist and being bombarded with idiotic "lol fooled you" style reviews and previews that continue to "fool" the local cattle long into the year with faked screenshots that keep getting sent to me bu sadly failing industry outsiders asking "er wasn't this supposed to be out by now?" style questions and requests that "i look into it pronto" and being unwilling to accept that they fell for a belated April Fools gag gone runaway is very frustrating and has in the past lost many a freelancer work because some idiot has claimed it as real and when refuted said freelancer is fired rather than make the in house writer look like an idiot.

so yea keep your jokes, stuff the hilarity, remove your water spitting flowers from lapels and put away your oh so hilarious fan fiction inspired review. Its not funny, some industry heads ARE really this stupid and do make our lives hell over these things because they have already asked for advertising space or worse already wrote and published something regarding your humourless fake, remember its poor working saps like myself that have to explain to there humourless ass that its all in good fun and not to be taken seriously.

Ok i should warn you that Blog entry's will be somewhat slow and steady for the next few weeks as i have managed to fall on my ass while shopping after slipping on a discarded shelf label and managing to leave a sizable dent on the floor with my oh so hard noggin.

One quick trip to triage and so fairly significant neck pain followed by pain killers and a short trip in a wheel chair to the nearest bus stop and i find myself at home in agony attempting to eat something so i can take more pain relief while my fingertips get progressively tingley and my neck annoyingly more stiff and painful.

MY girlfriend thinks i should sue...

..honestly im beginning to agree with her.

Now you all know I'm not one to just randomly give a company kudos randomly much less advertise there service in any way, but today I'm making a huge exception for a local firm that has simply blown me away with both its customer care and frankly staggeringly low pricing in comparison to every other PC repair chain I have had the dubious pleasure of being forced to use in the past.

Now I should say that Pentech are not exactly the biggest company and if you dont live in Co. Down finding them can be a little difficult especially now that there official site is down but given that there a local business and I am as yet to even come close to finding a better place to take my PC for repairs it would be idiotic of me to even think of not throwing a little free advertising there way.

I'm not going to give you a full list of costs and prices here simply because if i were it would take all damn day so instead I'm going to link you to there hotfrog & YahooLocal location sites so you can read the reviews yourself and find out where it it yourself.

There are always bad eggs in any open forum and in the case of YahooLocal this is more than a prevalent in the form of a local business rival attempting an attack on the company's good name in order to solicit business. So in order to fend off Warcrack addiction i have surrendered myself to a nice big 30 day trial of the Star Trek MMO courtesy of the same nice people that let me play the Beta last month.

a very quick review will be forthcoming on this game as soon as humanly possible with my recommendations published here on Aries Antics as soon as i get a chance to poke around with the finished game rather than teh last stage test realm.

So what does this mean for my WoW account and characters? well dont panic im still going to be playing them, but not just at the moment. As a guildless (more or less) player i know i will never see end game content and to be honest the in game holidays after three years hold very little interest for me so as a clever gamer im taking a break so that when the new expansion comes to fruition i will be coming back in reasonably high end gear and able to see the game as fresh rather than just another drag through dead content.

Now if you will excuse me im off to play in the final fronter with a load of obsessive fan boys and geeks much like myself.

Ok folks im back from my trip to the Star Trek universe via the the frankly incredible new MMO (but more about that later) and just in time too as i had the privilege and joy of hearing this wonderful song that pulled me screaming back to another amazing science fiction show Firefly!

After getting into a quick tussle with some klingons and finding myself destincly overwhelmed i was very thankful for a quick assist from the USS serenity and USS Firefly (thanks guys) who came warping in to save my skinny scientist backside just as my shields hit 5%

As fate would have it I had just at my moment of crisis been listening to this song.

Funny how things work out isnt it?

I have been *shock* & * horror* working...

Yep im on another mid to long term BETA TEST REVIEW!! and although i am at this time unable to tell you exactly what im doing (or annoyingly who im even doing it for) i can say that it is a huge game, so huge in fact some may even say its a frontier all of its own, some may even imply that it could be the final frontier!

oh well i'll be back with you all as soon as possible but until then i hope you live long and prosper!

Software for free: Avast! anti virus Home Edition

As you all know i'm not one to pay for anything when i dont have to. Some may call this being cheap, personally i like to call it frugal and sensible.
As freelancer i dont want to have my computer at risk but on that same note i simply dont have the free cash to throw in for frankly awful anti viral solutions such as Norton or McAffee, at between £30-£50 ($56-$96 US) a year for software that slows down my computer and laptop to a crawl and uses up a significant amount of my processor resources while offering little to no real protection to my work.

Then I was directed to avast! by a fellow freelancer as a totally free and effective anti virus that would protect my computer wile taking almost none of my run time. The system updates from the same viral database as both McAffee and Norton on a bi-weekly basis and thus offering not only similar viral control but also updating on a more regular basis.

Now I should say a few words on the system interface, namely that it sucks the big one and looks like it belongs on windows 98 and takes a goddamn age to scan through your files, if you happen to have a hard drive bigger than 60-90GB and if you have a 1TB drive or more in your system then you may well have to give it overnight once a month in order to do a full scan and clean up.

Regardless it is an efficient and ridiculously simple to use system offering professional level protection from its normal Home Edition that will run on ANY system, even happily protecting my crappy little netbook. Remember you do not pay of your protection EVER but should you still feel a little unsafe or simply have too much money you can always purchase the professional edition and get the updated interface and access to some really good system retrieval tools and firewall settings for you work networks.

All in all its a great deal and if the interface were a little better it would have a flawless score but as it stands:

97% stonking great and well worth the download.

Meet my shiny new ultra cheap Netbook disgo net browser 3000.
a snip at a paltry £99 (about $160-$190 US) my funky little friend here will be taking the workload off my laptop & desktop in the form of a much more affordable and expendable on the go method of both writing and uploading for work while i'm on assignment.

Now I know what your thinking "you have a perfectly good laptop that can do this and still lets you enjoy the full range of apps and games while your out in the real world", and thats the problem y'see. I know i am very easily destracted and having WoW and a myriad of movies at my finger tips tends to mean i rush my work so i can do something else like gaming or a movie or even the much misunderstood DTV dongle.
So in order to keep myself on track i splashed some cash on this little toy. Now the system is limited (at least until i install Linux on it) to Windows CE and with a tiny little 284MHz processor and a minuscule 64MB DDR RAM and using only a 2GB flash memory it means i have almost nothing to distract me bar the Internet itself.

Now i do have a 1GB DDR ram stick to go into it and i will soon be flashing Linus to it so it will get a bit of a boot in the bum as far as processing power go's but lets be honest this thing will never run WoW lol.

None the less it was well worth the small outlay and means i dont have to worry about my laptop being borrowed by the local constabulary during events or it taking damage and loosing everything as all my work is now held on 2 8GB flash drives that stay very much attached to my keys and lodged in my pocket or on my custom made USB Flash HD (see the how too archive for details on that) ready to be uploaded to work or to my home network when im finished.

If your looking for a new way to surf you really couldn't do better than this for the cash and combined with a 1 year warranty you wont worry to much about destroying or loosing it.

Merry Geekmas to all and to all a good night!

This year im bring the gift of the wonderful elseworlds title JLA: Created Equal.
The story is about a Superman having kids...er...kinda...y'see hes the last man on earth...well the last fertile man on earth after a massive biological disaster renders anyone with a Y chromosome sterile and soon after dead thus ending humanity as we know it. Fortunately Kal-El's Kryptonian DNA is made of sterner stuff and after knocking up Lois offers his DNA to the women of earth in order to repopulate...

...now i wont spoil the twist and by extension the second story (which i also included) and ending of this tale but just imagine for a moment a world of super human kiddies with similar powers to Supe's himself and just what there teenage years are going to be like.

How Too: Dreamcatcher giftables

Ok tis that time of year again folks and as you all know im cheap so for me its time to "make the thought count" and give away some freebies to my more ...unusual... friends.

Now im not saying this is a gift for just hippies and native Americans but i am saying that when i say ots the thought that counts in this case it will be more "the effort" that counts.

This is NOT an easy make but it is fairly quick and when decorated with a few feathers and beads (bought from any local craft shop)and a little creativity you can do something really personal for your friends remarkably quickly.

Now i should say, the video itself is of relievedly low quality but if you listen to the instructions it is quite clear what she is talking about and doing.
With a little practice you can probibly knock out one of these in about 40 mins but for your first one i suggest you take an hour and take your time. Apart from that you can (with a little imagination) make something wonderful for yourself or others with minimal effort and financial outlay.

NOW if your feeling especially cheap this year combine a very small version of this project with a few feathers and pop it inside an origami box (see last weeks make) and a little ribbon and you have an all but free but quite expensive looking craft gift to give away, and remember that athough teh smaller dreamcatchers are a little more fiddly to make they are a lot quicker and can be made with very cheap craft thread and due to there small size mistakes in there manufacture can easily be overlooked.

Note:
*if it looks terrible or if you screw up call it rustic design
*use local (and most importantly free) materials to make it more authentic
*clean all feathers in boiling water and place in an airing cupboard for 24 hours before use
*light application of a rawhide strip thong to a small catcher can make it an amazing necklace
*chicks dig handy craft, if you want to impress her add this as an extra to your REAL gift

How Too: Box clever

Well its time for my Christmas how to run down and this week its all about packaging.

I always have a hard time when it comes to packaging small gifts such as USB sticks, jewelry, small toys or gadgets etc.
then i came across this wonderful little piece of paper craft. Now i should say that this little project is a tad on the tough side but if you slow down the video a little and follow the stages carefully it can make an amazing gift box for friends and family.
For a somewhat larger box you can use stiff card at A3 size (or larger) and it should be able to contain pretty much any item you wish to put in it but as the size scales you will have to use heaver gauge card in order for it to be stable.

once the Box is complete simply screw up some tissue paper and wrap the ball of paper in a second skin of tissue in order to make a perfect pillow for your gift to sit upon.
Don't forget that you can also experiment with different coloured paper and patterns to really set your gift off then add a small ribon to hold the lid on and just like that you have a truly spectacular home made and very personal gift to put under the tree.

remember the gift counts but when your loved ones see the effort and care you have put into the packaging dont be surprised if they decide to keep the box too.

Day 6: Lost to a dream

I will be frank when i say i was far from happy to be venturing into the slumbering feral depths of the Wailing caverns, even less so in finding out that to perform this task i would be forced to group up with random strangers whose intentions seemed only to pillage this place of reflective slumber and feral druidism.
Regardless with the warped heads of the druid order put to rest and the beast within defeated i made my way back to Orgrimmar proud in the knowledge that i had fulfilled my duty to the best of my ability.
As i entered the city i was approached by a guard with a loosely bound letter from the local riding instructor who was apparently having some difficulty with one of his adolescent pups.
Seeing such a magnificent beast for the first time was nothing short of love at first sight but i became instantly aware of the poor creatures turmoil.
The emerald glow in his eyes signified Fel magic contamination somewhat similar to that of the eyes Blood Elfs and our own green skin, i had no choice i had to have him as my mount from that moment on.
Paying the riding instructor and stable master a nominal fee i took possession of the Dire Wolf who i have taken to calling Ash due to the remarkable colouration of his fur, for his first taste of freedom.

He is as swift as the wind and seems to have taken quite a liking to my core hound pup...

...i pray to the spirits of our ancestors that it is simply the pups playful nature and not anything else as cross breeding would be more than a little difficult to deal with especially when you consider both animals are male.

Day 5: A shaman in wolfs clothing

Leaving the confines of the Burning blades sinister clutches I made my final report to the Warchief, With there leaders gone and with no real links to ether the Legion itself or the sinister Shadow council the Buring Blade fell to ruin.
The Warchief seemed well pleased by my actions and granted me a true mark of honour by bestowing on me the Hammer of Orgrimmar and instructing his shaman traiers to teach me the ancient gift of the Frostwolf clan...

...the ability to transform myself into a being of pure spiritual energy and mold it to the clans totem, the eternal Frost wolf.

There are however some issues with being in that form for any length of time that may explain why we Shaman despite our comune with the elements are not particularly welcome in Winterspring...

...wisps are just so much fun to chase!

The Demon worshipping filth have secreted themselves in the caverns surrounding and under the city of Orgrimmar in the Rage fire Chasm, it was my job, my duty to find my way into the confidence of these cultists and seek out there leaders...

...and destroy them.

Donning the garb of the cult and acquiring a token of membership of there order was surprisingly easy but portraying myself as a Warlock proved harder. All Warlocks no matter there rank have with them a demonic minion of great power linking there will to that of the Burning Legion, i am a skilled magic user and my gifts lend well to passing as one of them but my lack of familiar would mark me apart quite distinctly.
To better conceal myself I found myself seeking out the famed pet vendor known as Breanni.
After negotiations and validation of my intent and a letter of authentication she sent me her most demonic looking pet a core hound pup known simply as Corey.
The young animal suits his assigned role well and is surprisingly friendly despite his rather vicious appearance and thanks to his acceptance of me as his master I found infiltrating the Burning Blade exceptionally easy.

I have however encountered one rather unfortunate problem that Breanni failed to inform me of...

...Core Hound poop tends to be a tad toxic, and molten, and er...well...i may not be able to return to several Inn's in Orgrimmar due to scorched floorboards & bed linen.

also several scorched and terrified cats, mounts and local guards in the city centre may be my fault...

As many of you know i am presently "less able" than most due to a long term back injury i sustained in a motorcycle accident a few years back.

Today i stupidly got into a conversation with a friend of mine in the street on the fascinating and wide reaching subject of the Starwars extended universe...

....for three and a half hours....

...standing up...

...and now im suffering in quite a huge way.
I regret nothing as the conversation was riveting, but the moment my pain killers wore off all hell broke loose and it felt like most of it decided to stick its pitchforks into my poor suffering ass on the way past.

So now I lay prone on a sturdy padded plank wishing nothing but the tender care of a hundred thousand demons on the gent that ran his piece of shit car into my back end all those years ago.

Day 2: Trolls and Tribulations

I have completed my basic training in the arts of my forefathers, i now wield the power of the earth herself. With the elements at my side and an earth totem at my feet I have been tasked to travel to the makeshift home of the Darkspear Trolls a place by the coast in southern Durotar called Sen'jin village.
It seems they are having some trouble with some of there more barbaric cousins to the south and a property dispute with some centaur to the west, it seems it is time for some totemic diplomacy...

...in so far as that if they choose to be undiplomatic I will be forced to insert my totem in there nether regions violently with my hammer.

I cant help but think that some of the villagers may be taking advantage of my good nature, i mean i understand that there having difficulty but asking me to go fishing for them is a bit beyond what i am willing to stoop to...

...pity about all the damn tigers attempting to eat me.

A Peons Journey: New feature

Ok new feature time.

As of today i have left my old server Surafang (EU) behind and set my sights on the sunny shores of Earthen Ring (US) in order to level a shammy and hopefully join the world record breaking guild A.I.E (http://wiki.aie-guild.org/index.php?title=Main_Page)

A peons Journey is an exercise in Role Play and will almost entirely be in character from the perspective of my Orc Shaman Ariies.
This feature will be erratic at best but i hope you enjoy it. ok here we go...

Day One: A journey begins

I write this journal in hopes that my words will someday free the imaginations of those who follow in my wake down the difficult and dangerous path known as the way of the elements. We shaman must take our cues from the land itself wield that power with wisdom and courage and balance that which is unjust or corrupt with our every deed. First Sunday of the month prior to Christmas means massive clean and tidy up day for me.
Not really that much fun but there comes a time when every nook and cranny must be scrubbed all the tat i have accumulated since spring must be thrown away or given to charity.

fun and games im sure you would agree but every now and then i come across something that i really though i had thrown away/lost/broken etc. and to my surprise is still usable or could be useful to me in some way.

Thus far during my clean up i have found:

* My old ipod nano
* The Driver CD's for my old laptop
* My old wallet (with £5 UK and $20 Canadian in the back of it)
* My Gameboy advance & games
* A pack of 40 AA battery's
* The car adaptor for my Mini Fridge
* 3 generic USB sticks
* 2 USB MP3 players (no idea where they came from)
* about £12 in copper coins and other loose change
* the spare battery & sim card from my old Nokia
* and pens of every colour shape and variety you could think of.

This is not to mention the things i was actually looking for such as old school books and demo discs and media discs from old reviews, a few USB extension cables and some previously lost PSP games and memory stick's.

All in all not a bad clean up and its only mid day. I haven't even begun to clean out my computer parts case and shelfs so who knows what treasures i may yet find.

oh well better get back to it, later folks!

Well i guess it had to happen eventually, after all "Aries Antics" has been around for a few years now and we are rapidly approaching the half million views mark so i guess a few bots were bound to pop up.

I have to say that although i notice and kill all of there posts im still not exactly happy with being spammed and as for the shady business of posting new advertising comments on my archives I should warn any potential advertisement spammers that i always keep my iPhone on me and have a real time update set for all posts made despite there source.

With this in mind i have began ISP blocking any spam I locate. I generally choose not to do this due to the rather aggressive and widespread nature of the IP blocker but as many long term readers already know this is not the first time i have been forced into this and should it continue there are "other" methods to deal with viral marketing on private projects such as my own.

...I just hope you have a really good firewall and spam filter...

...mewhahahahah!

Ok look im not a bad guy and i really REALLY dont want to be raked over the coals but considering you have to still have to pay for your CD key in order to play the whole game i cant see what the difference between downloading the full WoTLK (US) version and downloading the free trial version other than file size...

...seriously though this is for all my comrades over on a "certain" podcast and US guild that for blatantly obvious reasons i wont name here for fear that i would sully there good name and guild reputation.

Happy Birthday Warcraft (15) and WoW (5)

Its genuinely hard for me to admit to this but I have been part of the Warcraft universe in some way or another for almost 12 of its frankly staggering 15 year run.
We have had our ups and downs, expansions have required computer upgrades and installing processes's that rival anything the Spanish inquisition ever came up with but each and every time i feel tired or bored of that universe something new comes out and draws me back in.

Then in November 2004 World of Warcraft hit the USA and people around the world began to beg steal and borrow from there American cousins for a sweet sweet taste of the Warcraft worlds answer to Everquest.
It was a truly incredible experience and although I only got a few short weeks playing on those first few fabled realms on my falsified log in details before my computer decided enough was enough and went to silicone hell to play with the demonic toasters.

it took a full year for me to make my way back to Azeroth, but thanks to the EU launch i was finally able to tailor my account without being forced to search through the US Yellow pages to find a suitable identity. And after a rather painful install process (and first few patches and bug fixes downloaded) "Lensolas" (im a Tolkien fan sue me) the Night elf Hunter took his first few tentative steps into the world of warcraft. It took 4 and a half months to level him up to 60 and every single moment was a blast, Black wing lair, the Molten core and finally the Dragon Onyxia fell to the slings and arrows of this pointy eared purple DPS machine.
Alternate characters sprung froth from his success in the form of My human rogue "Baaldrik" and my dwarfen warrior "Irnbrood" who after much struggling and wasted time also capped out at 60 in some shiny new tier gear.

Then it all went to hell. I had recently joined a pretty hardcore raiding guild and joined there forum community in order to better offer my services as a DPS and Tank to the raiding teams. I joined using a variation of my Log in name and my familiar password so that i wouldn't forget it.
Within only 3 weeks of joining the Rebellion guild official forums i knew something was wrong. I attempted to log into my account to find that i no longer had access. After a significantly panicked phone call with account services and a rapid email check and confirmation i got a new password and was able to log back in.

Every thing i had ever owned, ever gold earned, every epic bartered for, crafted, quested and battled the minions of the underworld for were gone, and i wasn't alone. The entire guild had been hit, the forum had been cracked and our passwords and account details derived from our log in details. The guild was devastated in a way we simply couldn't recover from. At this time Blizz policy concerning hacked accounts was not quite as developed as it is now and we were tolld in no short order that due to the fact that the entire guild had been hit (many of us with temp bans now due to being used as spam bots and gold farmers) the odds of us retrieving our gear from the GM staff and unbanning our accounts was decidedly unlikely. Now with all credit to the staff we did get a good amount of our gear back and even some of our bank possessions back along with the vast majority of our gold but for me (and about 90% of the guild) it was game over time. We let our accounts shut down and withdrew from the game in general.

It was August/September of 2006 before i was convinced to return via a very old friends request and a free trial ticket for a new account. We rerolled on the Alonsus (PVE) server as a Human Paladin known as "Aries" (the chap who previously had the name gifted it to me by deleting an old toon! how freaking cool was that) and in only 3 short months i had leveled him to 60 and was gearing mysellf up for the soon to be released expansion known as the Burning Crusade.
January 2007 came and went with blistering speed and TBC opened up a whole new world for us to play in and thanks to the guidance of the frankly astounding "Resistance" Guild i capped out at 70 as a fully fledged and geared Holy Paladin as one of the guilds main raid healers.
But things happen and people change and after a few months of farming Karazan many of us were getting a little bored, and I had really started only logging in for raid nights due to work commitments knowing fully that simply healing through this same old content had reached its zenith.

Frustrated and annoyed with lack of progress (but still unwilling to give up on the game) i rerolled and switched server yet again. The Surafang server had just been opened and the idea of running AQ with a fresh server appealed somewhat and thus "Malace" the undead Mage came into existence. It was really only a matter of time before i transfered my Paladin over and after a quick name and race change (to a Bloodelf named "Maladin") he capped up to level 80 and thats up pretty much up to date.

its been a hell of a ride and its far from over, so heres to you Blizz happy birthday and many happy returns.

Oh well it was a nice little dream while i had it...

Looks like it was merely a "permission to publish" email asking me to sign over certain publish rites so that it could go in both the new WoW magizine some time in the future and on the website archive after the initial publishing. So no its not a big break and with so many rites signed over as far as use of intelectual property go's the only recognition i will get is as a website contributer and to see my work published on an officially registered Blizz website.

Seven weeks, three days, eleven hours and a quick trip to the local post office and I have FINALLY got my XBOX back...

...well kinda...

I got a shiny new Elite, a black behemoth, a noir nemesis to the PC and PS3 and i gotta tell you, it was worth every damn penny for the upgrade.
So what does this all mean? Well im back on XBL and im playing with my shiny new toy, which in turn mean im neglecting my WoW toons a little for the next couple of days while i attempt to regain & remake some of my now lost XBOX saves while downloading the truly epic amount of downloaded content to the new console (about 16gigs of DLC ) as well as breaking in my shiny new black pad.

So not too interesting i know but thats what im doing.

...so how can a race incapable of being a paladin (at least until the next expansion) roll this class to Lv80?

well....to be honest they cant and er nor can I and this is just a really cool graphical glitch available on the latest release of the WoW client. Heres how you do it

The WoW.com staff has confirmed it works, though the timing required is very precise. You need to be quick, but being too fast hitting one or the other is just as bad as being too slow. A few of us found that we had to slow down our fingers to do it properly, because "fast" to a hardcore FPS gamer is very different than "fast" to a casual MMO gamer. Click first, hit enter second. Not the other way around.

And there you have it...now be off with you, make yourself a Tauradin or a undead hunter or even a troll druid waaaaay before blizz let you in game.

Well Blizz you done it, you made me so sick of being squishy that im going back to my trusty Human Paladin, finishing leveling to 80....and Faction transferring to the Horde.

Oh wait did i tell you that i finally managed to get 7mbps out of BT?

no?

Well i did, for all of 11mins on Wednesday at 01.30am i was so shocked i actuality giggled... I'm a man looking down the barrel of my 30th birthday and i caught myself giggling and clapping like an idiot and STILL not getting my full service yet so damn happy that i have proof of my line capacity that im acting like its Christmas at one in the bloody morning.

oh well, i can now at least demand an off peak service comparable to this (around 6.5-7.0 Mbps) and feel like im not being an unreasonable jerk. Well thats my reasoning anyway despite knowing that im never gonna get it.

The battle with BT continues...

...it appears im not exactly winning. For all intents and reasons beyond my control the indian chappys at "British Telecom" have somehow magically come to the conclusion that "up to 8MBps" is the same as saying "tough shit you can only have 4-6MBps and you can keep paying for the 8MBps service and like it!" despite my local service provider has my line speed clocked at a whopping 20MBps and the fact that i can throw quite a sizable stone and hit my local exchange, meaning that my line speed should be in the region of 16-20MBps with little or no line lag.

A complaint has been made, fuck em i want what the hell im paying for.

this deos however mean that until this is resolved im stuck to 4-6MBps Broadband, more than enough to play MMO's and browse comfortably but it still not what i am paying for...

more info as i get it.

Ok so its that time in the game again, im geared, im at the level cap and im bored out of my tiny mind...

As with all things repetition leads to monotony and after finding out that during my down time my guild Blessed has fallen apart my desire to play has wained somewhat.

so what do i do?

Well as with "wrath" and The burning crusade" before it im left the leveling doldrums until the next expansion hits the shelves. I feel now is the best time to relax, maby play some xbox and take a break from Raiding.

Yes Blizzcon '09 happened, storeys were told, rumours were routed and panels were bombarded with the myriad miscellaneous query's and questions of the great unwashed.
All in all a good time was had by all.

So whats new then? Well basically there gonna blow up Azeroth...as in explode....destroy....mutilate....annihilate.

er yea I was shocked too. but this Cataclysmic event is to allow certain long awaited changes in the World of Warcraft. During these events however two new playable races have emerged from there hidey holes and joined one of the two factions vieing for the now distinctly limited resources of the now shattered world.

The are the Worgen (feral werewolve like creatures with an aptitude for magic) joining the Alliance and the Goblins (greedy little green dudes who run the airships) joining the Horde.

How this will play out im not sure and the exact story line is currently unpublished but rest assured as soon as i get some concrete info ill be posting it here.

Damn you BT, damn you and your stupid "we will escalate your case to...", damn your petty nasal whining, damn your "were doing all we can" and damn your stupid outsourced accents!

20 days with dial up level speed and only now are they "considering" sending out an engineer to the local exchange to "modify my personal access". Lets just say my patients with outsourced idiots who know as much about broadband internet access as i do about sub quantum string theory and its relation to dimensional harmonics...

...sure i know it exists as a subject of curiosity and i know that somebody out there has a relatively good idea how and why it relates to my day to day life, but damned if i can do anything about it so why should i care?

Today is the last day im giving BT to fix my service before i start official complaints through Ofcom (http://www.ofcom.org.uk/).

Here is the latest results from "British" Telecom thanks to SpeedTest.net, as you can see it looks more than a little familiar to my regular readers.
It has been so damn long since i was able to get on line effectively that my goddamn World Of Warcraft account has frozen due to me running out of game time.

As for work, well i am currently forced to download all my work to a PDA and send it to work via my local McDonalds wifi...

yea...i know...im not a happy bunny

so once again i sit upon my rump from 8am to 1pm waiting for a "specialist" engineer to attempt to fix the issue. If this continues i may have to seriously consider changing service provider.

the critically acclaimed director of National Lampoon's Vacation; Ferris Bueller's Day Off; Weird Science; The Breakfast Club; Some Kind of Wonderful; Sixteen Candles; Pretty in Pink; Planes, Trains and Automobiles; Uncle Buck; Home Alone and its sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. He was the teen movie director of a generation and in my humble opinion a genius of comedic timing and humour.

poor guy, he will be missed.

Ok so here we are again...

...interwebs enabled....er.....kinda,you see unbeknown to me BT requires a 10 day "line test" and "run up" before switching on my fancy new 8 mb/s broadband here at the new house.

this is what im currently getting (on a good day off peak)

this....is apparently what im supposed to be using for Internet access until my 10 day fuckabout is finished. Yes your reading that correctly thats 0.13mb/s download speed thats 0.43 mb/s SLOWER than dial up internet.

As im sure your aware...this is not going to cut the mustard so today at some stage (as this is day 10) im going to have to have a word with the fine chaps at BT tech support to try and get this resolved.

stay tuned for there answer as soon as i manage to get one.

So after two loooooooooong weeks and a myriad of calls to BT a full house move with redecoration, plumbing, plastering, scrubbing and clearing, carpet laying and fixture fitting done and dusted I am finally back online.

Apparently however my reintroduction to the internet seems to have unfortunately killed Amy Whitehouse but i suppose that cant really be helped. for those of you not in the know you may have noticed that every time i go to post a blog entry a celeb croaks....now if only i could harness this power i would be invincible!

regardless im back, let the famous corpses fly because i aint going nowhere!

Wow....just wow, each time i went to post about a celeb' death this week i get hit by another.
Three of the greats have died this week and to be honest i would love to make some sort of humorous gag or quip but honestly im left standing here with my jaw on the floor wonderin gwos gonna win the corpse lotto next....

...seriously who's next?...is Obama having icons knocked off? i guess Arnie better learn to duck or he may be next on the reaper's list of "to be terminated"

So im in Naxx doing my mage thing last week, clearing quarters and pwning in a pyrotechnical fashion and looting purples when suddenly im booted from the server and unable to log in...

...yep the Internet decided "screw you buddy" and took something of a dump all over me.

It took four goddamn days to get a bloke from Tesco internet to be bothered to call and escalate my problem high enough to get an engineering chappy out from BT and another four for him to get to me.

When he finally got out it took him less than half an hour to locate and fix the problem.
A full week wasted, no internet, no wow, raining outside, nothing to do...

...i may have went a little crazy but thats between me and my new best friend Geoff the talking potato.

oh well im back on now...

...so anyway i was discussing alternates to raiding and grinding in terms of getting 5000gold for my epic flying mount...

...this was not it by the way, but im open minded so lets see what develops.

Ah Blizzard you done it again, Winter Grasp (my new favourite PVP area) has been nerfed and broken. Only six months after its conception the World Of Warcrafts only open world PVP has been shattered beyond repair.

The changes are as follows:

Vehicle health and damage output in Strand of the Ancients and Wintergrasp now scale with the item level of the operator's gear. Power scaling is now 1% damage and 1% health per average item level.
All Wintergrasp daily quests have been changed to a weekly format. The honor and Stone Keeper's Shards rewarded for completing these quests have been increased to compensate.
The bonus honor for winning the battle in Wintergrasp and controlling/destroying towers has been reduced.

So basically is back to Gear Vs Gear rather than skill Vs skill in PVP again....god dammit blizz will you never learn?

Ohh yes its been a quick one, with less than 15 days played and with some tasty blue gear under my belt and a magic carpet under my feet im feeling pretty damn good about myself.

Regardless PVP combat beacons to get me a little bit of purple bling and some better stats. so i must be off.

I was standing in the bank today lined up behind one of those godawful tension barriers when i happened across a scrawled note daintily placed just a little ahead on the little platform you would write your bank slips and cheques on and i'll be honest im not sure but i think the internet is leaking out into the real world, judge for yourself...

....no im not going to explain....just enjoy the insanity

to say i'm busy is something of an understatement, and oddly its nothing to do with MMO's or Warcraft in general. May rush has happened in the gaming community as this is generally the time we start seeing this summers hot new releases come in for previews and company's asking for tweaks or changes to previously completed advertising work.

so yea im up to my emerald green ass in paperwork so dont expect anyting amazing for a couple of weeks while i try to pull this around.

oh and yes i know its a Sunday, and yes im at work, and yes...it sucks.
